“Service plumbing is not as cut and dry as people may think, and I loved solving the problem and being the hero in the customers' eyes,” West said.

When West told his father he planned to leave school for plumbing, he recalls sensing disappointment. His father had worked to carve out a future where West didn’t have to become a plumber. What he hadn’t anticipated was his son wanting to become one.

“That disappointment melted into an unspoken pride that I was following in his footsteps for the same reasons that led him to follow in his father's footsteps,” West said. “That was the best decision I ever made.”

Thirteen years later, West is CEO of the Jonesboro, Arkansas-based company his grandfather started. Today, he works alongside his father, Chris, as the father-son duo operates Chris West Plumbing. Both are involved with PHCC-National Association and PHCC of Arkansas.

West also wants young people to recognize the opportunities available in the trades. He believes these are not simply jobs, but careers that can provide strong earning potential and benefits without requiring the traditional college path.

Today, West finds fulfillment not only in helping customers through plumbing emergencies, but also in developing younger technicians.

His proudest achievement also reflects that focus on people. Several years ago, Chris West Plumbing hired a man coming out of a drug rehabilitation program. West worked alongside him for his first six months.

That employee has since been offered a full-time position at the company, is married, pursuing home ownership and has become a cornerstone of the company’s culture.

“I am most proud that [we] gave him a chance and allowed him to have the life his hard work and dedication deserves,” West said.

At home, West has another important role: husband and father of three daughters. He may be outnumbered by girls, but happily so.
