Engineering what happens behind the walls

Jeanette Lin’s career in plumbing engineering began with a building that put normally hidden systems on full display. While studying abroad in Europe, Lin visited the Centre Pompidou in Paris, known for its “inside-out” design and exposed structural and MEP systems.
“Seeing those systems become part of the architecture completely changed the way I looked at buildings,” Lin said.
That curiosity eventually led her to building systems engineering and, with guidance from a mentor, the plumbing profession. Lin has spent approximately 12 years in the industry, and serves as a Senior Consultant in Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineering at WSP.
For Lin, designing systems that most occupants will never see is precisely what makes the work meaningful.
“Most people don't think much about plumbing systems unless something goes wrong, but they play a critical role in providing clean water, protecting public health, and ensuring buildings operate safely and comfortably,” she said.
Lin also enjoys the collaboration required to bring those systems to life, with engineers, architects, contractors, manufacturers and owners working together to solve each project's unique challenges.
One of her proudest moments came early in her career when she was given the opportunity to lead the design of a residential mixed-use high-rise.
“It was definitely a bit overwhelming at first, but it was also an incredible learning experience,” Lin said. “Being trusted with that level of responsibility helped me build confidence, develop my skills, and grow as an engineer.”
Today, Lin hopes more people recognize the range of opportunities available within PHCP-PVF, particularly for women. She points to organizations such as Women of ASPE for providing mentorship, networking and a supportive professional community.
Away from engineering, Lin has experience performing in a very different setting. She played piano for years growing up and performed in several concerts, including double concertos.
The experience, she said, taught her “focus, dedication, and how to perform under pressure,” skills that have translated well to her engineering career.
