The COVID-19 pandemic had a massive effect on every part of our lives; including the built environment. 

In February, Standards Development Organizations review end-of-year activities. Energy, water systems, refrigerants, and products had a lot of activity in 2023. See lists for new, revised, or reaffirmed standards, standards in development, and withdrawn standards.

This year starts the code development cycle for the building and safety codes to be published in 2027 for the United States (U.S.).

Building and safety codes are near and dear to my heart as they, undoubtedly, have a significant impact on public health, safety and welfare. Buildings in every jurisdiction in the United States use some version of building and safety codes. In addition, building and safety codes cover most products manufactured for the building and construction industries.

As governments continue to race toward achieving the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement, it is now evident that the COVID-19 pandemic had an unexpected side effect of helping to lower global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). However, with more individuals beginning to re-engage in pre-pandemic activities, emissions are once again on the rise.

The Commercial Green Construction Professional certification was created to assist in developing new standards for building construction in order to address the problem of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to help reinforce societal health, life and safety benefits. 

Earlier this year, spring floods hit Indiana, Michigan and Ohio hard, killing several people and displacing thousands of others from their homes.
