John Siegenthaler Workshop: Hydronics for High Efficiency Wood-fired and Pellet-fired Boilers

Session added to April 9-11 Northeast Biomass Heating Expo.

January 31, 2014

A “Hydronics for High Efficiency Wood-fired and Pellet-fired Boilers” workshop has been added  to the 6th Annual Northeast Biomass Heating Expo (NEBHX), which is scheduled for April 9-11, 2014 in Portland, Maine. The addition of the technical session underscores the depth of specialty knowledge that will be available to conference attendees, and highlights the Steering Committee’s consistent effort to increase practical learning for engineers, architects and HVAC specialists.

The day-long technical workshop on April 10 will be led by John Siegenthaler, who is the Hydronics editor for the BNP Media Plumbing Group and a columnist for PM and PM Engineer (pme).

The 6.5-hour workshop will feature topics key to the optimal installation of biomass (e.g. wood chip, pellet, and log) boilers for space and hot water heating in residential and commercial settings.  Topics to be addressed include:

  • The importance of hydronics to renewable energy
  • Wood gasification boilers
  • Pellet-fired boilers
  • Thermal storage options
  • Boiler protection options
  • Low temperature hydronic heat emitters
  • Instantaneous domestic water heating assembly
  • High efficiency ECM-based circulators
  • System examples

NEBHX Conference Chair, Joseph Seymour, highlighted the addition of this technical workshop and the importance to the New England region.  “Rural homes and businesses in the northeastern states are highly dependent on expensive fossil heating fuels like propane and oil; in Maine, that number approaches nearly 70%.

“Engineers and architects who understand proper hydronics design for biomass heating systems will be able to meet that growing market demand and help consumers make the switch to cheaper, affordable, and renewable biomass heating fuels,” said Seymour.

Lunch provided

Workshop attendees will also receive a complimentary lunch and snacks, access to the conference and expo, and may apply for six continuing education units (CEUs).  Depending on the attendee’s needs, workshop participation may be counted towards state annual licensing requirements. Space is limited and additional registration fees apply.
