As data subscribers grow, shipments of wireless application protocol (WAP) handsets are rising, growing from approximately 33 percent of all handsets shipped in 2000 to almost 90 percent in 2004, according to a new study from Allied Business Intelligence Inc., "Wireless Internet 2000."

In 2000 and 2001 most carriers will have made the move toward implementing high-end data services through actual access via general radio packet services, CDMA-2000, W-CDMA and WAP.
