SEO Has Changed. Has Your Business?

Part 1 of a 3-part series: SEO isn't dead. It's finally growing up.

Modern SEO is about building authority over time with your website's domain.

August 11, 2026

If you've followed my articles over the years, you know I believe marketing is constantly evolving. Every year brings new technology, new platforms, and new ways for customers to find the products and services they need. The businesses that continue to grow aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest marketing budgets … they're the ones willing to adapt.

That's exactly why I wanted to write this three-part series.

Over the next three articles, we're going to talk about one of the biggest shifts happening in marketing today: search engine optimization, or SEO. Not the SEO we were talking about five years ago. The SEO your business needs to understand today.

There is a tremendous amount of misinformation surrounding SEO right now. Every week, someone proclaims that SEO is dead. Others insist artificial intelligence has made Google obsolete. Some businesses have even started questioning whether they need a website at all.

Let's clear the air. SEO isn't dead. It's finally growing up. And honestly, I think that's good news for businesses that are truly committed to serving their customers.

I've spent more than 25 years helping companies build their brands, grow their businesses, and navigate an ever-changing marketing landscape. During that time, I've watched marketing evolve from print advertising to websites, from email marketing to social media, from desktop computers to mobile devices, from the yellow pages to LinkedIn, and now into the era of artificial intelligence.

Every major shift has had one thing in common: businesses that embraced change found opportunity, while those that resisted eventually found themselves trying to catch up. SEO is no different.

From Gaming the System to Earning Trust

There was a time when SEO felt almost like following a recipe. Choose the keyword you wanted to rank for. Add it to your page title. Repeat it throughout your website. Include it in your headings. Build a few backlinks, and if everything went well, Google rewarded you with higher rankings.

For a while, it worked. Unfortunately, it also created an internet full of content that wasn't written for people, it was written for search engines.

I'm sure you've landed on those websites before. The writing feels awkward because the same phrase is repeated over and over. The content barely answers your question. It exists simply because someone wanted to rank for a keyword, not because they genuinely wanted to educate or help their audience.

Thankfully, Google became much smarter. Today's search engine understands context and semantic structure. It recognizes relationships using links (Uniform Resource Locators also known as URLs) between topics, interprets the intent behind a search, and has become remarkably good at determining whether content actually provides value.

That's a significant change. Businesses can no longer win by trying to outsmart Google's algorithm. Today, they have to earn something much more valuable. They have to earn expertise, experience, authority, and trust (Google’s E-E-A-T).

AI Has Changed How People Search

Artificial intelligence has accelerated this shift faster than anyone expected.

Whether someone is using ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, or another AI platform, people are asking questions differently than they did just a few years ago. Instead of typing a handful of keywords into a search bar, they're asking complete questions in the form of informational, navigational, commercial, or transactional queries, requesting comparisons, seeking recommendations, and expecting thoughtful, conversational answers.

Search itself has become more human. That means Google has also become more human in the way it evaluates content. It's no longer looking for pages that simply contain the right keywords. It's looking for pages that genuinely answer the question someone is asking.

If your website is still built around keyword stuffing instead of helping customers solve real problems, you're already behind.

It's Not About More Traffic

One of the biggest misconceptions I still hear from business owners is that SEO is about getting more traffic. It isn't. Traffic that never converts into customers doesn't grow your business.

The real goal of SEO is attracting the right visitors… people who are actively searching for your products, services, or expertise. That only happens when your website demonstrates credibility, authority, and trustworthiness.

Think about it from Google's perspective. If someone is searching for information about industrial pumps, commercial HVAC systems, legal services, financial planning, or healthcare, Google wants confidence that it's sending people to someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

The page with the most keywords isn't necessarily the best answer. The business with the most expertise around the search query filter usually is.

That's why experience matters. That's why original content matters. That's why demonstrating your knowledge has become one of the most important investments your company can make.

Your Website Is Your Reputation

Years ago, your website was often viewed as an online brochure. Once it launched, the project was finished.

Today, your website is a living representation of your business across search engines. It's your credibility. It's your reputation. It's often the very first impression a potential customer has of your company.

Unfortunately, many businesses still treat their websites like a one-time project. They invest in a redesign, celebrate the launch, and then leave it untouched for years and it’s evident in their footer section of their website with (C) “outdated year”.

Meanwhile, their competitors continue publishing articles, answering customer questions, improving their user experience, collecting reviews, adding YouTube videos, showcasing successful projects, and demonstrating their expertise month after month.

Google notices. More importantly, so do potential customers. A website that sits unchanged slowly begins to tell a story … and it's probably not the story you want it telling.

SEO Is Bigger Than Keywords

This is where I think many businesses still get stuck. They continue thinking about SEO as something technical. Something a developer handles behind the scenes after the website is built.

Today's SEO is much bigger than that:

It's your website's performance.

It's the quality of your content.

It’s your filename structuring.

It's your photography and videos.

It's your customer reviews.

It's your page speed.

It's your mobile experience.

It's how easy your website is to navigate.

It's whether visitors actually find the answers they came looking for.

And most importantly, it's whether people leave your website believing you are the expert they should trust.

Everything works together.  That's why there is no longer a magic SEO checklist or a quick fix that suddenly puts your business on page one of Google. Modern SEO is about building authority over time with your website’s domain.

The Businesses That Will Win

I've always believed the best marketing doesn't feel like marketing. It feels helpful. It educates. It solves problems. It answers questions before someone ever picks up the phone. That philosophy hasn't changed, and it's exactly where SEO is headed.

The businesses that will thrive over the next decade won't necessarily be the ones producing the most content. They'll be the ones producing the most valuable content. They'll consistently demonstrate their expertise, answer the questions their customers are asking, and become the trusted resource in their industry.

Ironically, that's exactly what Google has been trying to reward all along.

Looking Ahead

If there's one takeaway from this first article, it's this: stop asking, "How do we rank higher?" Instead, start asking, "How do we become the most trusted and cited resource in our industry?"

That shift in thinking changes everything. It changes the way you write. The way you build your website. The way you create content. The way you serve your customers. And ultimately, the way Google and other search engines view your business.

SEO isn't dead. It's more important than it's ever been.

It's simply evolved into something much more strategic, much more sophisticated, and much more focused on trust than ever before.

In Part 2 of this series, we'll pull back the curtain on what Google is actually looking for in 2026. We'll explore why expertise, authority, trust, user experience, technical performance, and content quality have become the foundation of modern SEO … and what those changes mean for your business.

Then, in Part 3, we'll bring it all together with a practical roadmap. I'll share the steps every business should be taking today to strengthen its online presence, improve search visibility, and build an SEO strategy that isn't based on shortcuts, but on long-term growth.

Because understanding that SEO has changed is only the first step. Knowing what to do next is where the real opportunity begins.
