IAPMO has concluded the technical committee meeting toward the development of the 2027 edition of the Water Efficiency and Sanitation Standard (WE•Stand), previous editions of which are American National Standards.

The technical committee, consisting of a broad coalition of industry experts — installers, inspection officials, contractors, engineers, and manufacturers — considered public comments to amend the WE•Stand in advance of the release of the 2027 edition. The actions to accept, modify, or reject these comments will be electronically balloted to the technical committee for formal voting between May 29-June 26. The results of the votes will be made public in the Report on Comments to be published for review on Sept. 4.

The WE•Stand technical committee met and considered public comments seeking to amend the code in such areas as: listing requirements and maximum water consumption rates for plumbing fixtures and fixture fittings; leak detection, monitoring, and control devices; listing and installation requirements for water treatment devices and systems including ozone systems, UV disinfection, reverse osmosis and nanofiltration equipment, Legionella treatment devices, and drinking water treatment units; requirements for monitoring water consumption and efficient water use in data centers; estimating the supply demand load for commercial buildings using the Water Demand Calculator; design and installation requirements for site-built composting toilet and urine diversion systems; design requirements for untreated gray water systems; allowable uses of treated water from onsite treatment systems; design and installation requirements for engineered onsite treatment systems; Log Reduction Targets (LRT) and monitoring of onsite treatment systems; minimum water quality of harvested rainwater; rainwater storage tanks supplying water for fire protection systems; and professional qualifications for installers and inspectors.

IAPMO urges its members and other interested parties to get involved in the development process to ensure effectiveness in preserving the public health, safety, and welfare. Manufacturers, potential users of the standard, installers and maintainers, labor representatives, design professionals, enforcing authorities, and consumers all benefit from a cooperative effort in developing codes and standards.
