Brown Friday: Yelp reveals America’s most clogged cities as plumbers prep for booming Thanksgiving demand
In preparation for plumbers' busiest day of the year, Yelp reveals the "most clogged cities" in America.

As Thanksgiving approaches, plumbers across America are bracing for what industry experts call "Brown Friday" — the day after turkey day — when emergency plumbing calls hit their annual peak. During this time, Yelp searches spike for trusted plumbers who can quickly rescue clogged toilets, drains and garbage disposals. Last year, Brown Friday-related searches surged for “emergency plumber” (up 27%), “plumber” (up 22%), and “24 hour plumbing” (up 19%), when comparing the two weeks before Thanksgiving Day to those on Thanksgiving Day and the two weeks after.
This year, plumbing pros are preparing for another busy Brown Friday. “Brown Friday is always our busiest day of the year, and with last year being busier than the year before, all signs point to even more calls this year,” says Josh Campbell, founder and president of Rescue Air & Plumbing in Dallas. “With more families cooking at home, increased use of disposable wipes [which can clog pipes], and bigger gatherings putting extra stress on aging pipes, systems are pushed to their limits. The smartest hosts are the ones who prep early, and keep a pro’s number at the ready.”
To help households nationwide get ahead of post-holiday mishaps, we’re revealing the most clogged cities in the U.S. — where plumbing services are in highest demand for Thanksgiving-related emergencies — and sharing expert tips from Campbell to keep your Thanksgiving feast from turning into a flood of frustration.
Salt Lake City: The “Most Clogged City” in the U.S., followed by Dallas and Honolulu
Salt Lake City topped this year’s list as the clogged capital of the U.S., seeing a 23% overall increase in plumbing-related searches — like clogged sinks, broken garbage disposals and leaky toilets — during last year’s Brown Friday time period. Yelp data shows Salt Lakers were having some serious leaks, with searches for “leak repair” up a staggering 800%, potentially caused by the colder temperatures and winter storms that have hit the area around Thanksgiving in previous years. Other significant search increases in Salt Lake City include “plumbers near me” (up 180%), “dishwasher repair” (up 71%), and “septic services” (up 60%).
Taking the “number two” spot is Dallas, with a 15% overall increase in plumbing-related searches during the Brown Friday time period. Searches in Dallas increased specifically for “septic pumping services” (up 300%) and “toilet repair” (up 167%). Campbell explains, “With our city’s older homes, unpredictable weather, and legendary Texas hospitality, it’s no surprise that Dallas is one of the nation’s top Brown Friday hotspots.”
Rounding out the top five are Honolulu, with a 12% overall increase in plumbing-related searches, Miami (up 11%), and Los Angeles (up 11%).
