The Federal Trade Commission issued a proposed rule Jan. 9 to update the ranges of comparability for residential water heater and gas-fired pool heater EnergyGuide labels. The proposal also would require that the estimated annual energy cost shown on the EnergyGuide label for water heaters be updated using 2012 national average energy costs. This notice also includes some proposed text changes for the water heater and pool heater labels.

On Feb. 6, the FTC proposed changes to the EnergyGuide labels for residential central air conditioners and furnaces subject to the U.S. Department of Energy’s regional efficiency standards. The final rule also includes revised label requirements for residential central heat pumps, boilers and oil-fired furnaces.
