IAPMO seeks UMC Legionella Task Group members

IAPMO.gif
January 16, 2023

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) is accepting applications and seeking technical experts to participate on a task group to address Legionella exposure risk to the public posed by mechanical equipment.

The scope of the Legionella Task Group is to address concerns pertaining to the control and intervention of Legionella associated with mechanical systems and equipment, including:

  • Verify correlations between temperature, concentration limits, and Legionella growth potential;
  • Verify remediation actions and water treatment plans;
  • Review other factors for Legionella growth potential including, but not limited to, water sources, circulation rates, disinfection residual, and piping materials;
  • Identify additional methods of chemical and non-chemical treatment methods; and
  • Correlate with existing industry standards.

The task group recommendations will be forwarded to the Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC) Technical Committee for consideration in the development of the 2027 edition of the UMC.

Task group members will participate via conference call or web meeting, provide their perspective on the code, and assist in drafting recommendations for action by the UMC Technical Committee’s consideration. Applicants are not required to be members of the UMC Technical Committee.

The deadline to apply is March 1.

IAPMO employs a consensus development process accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), gathering one of the largest, most knowledgeable assemblies of plumbing and mechanical experts in the world at its annual education and business conference and technical committee meetings, enabling anyone — members and non-members alike — to lend their voice to proposed changes to the code. The 2027 edition of the UMC will mark the ninth time the UMC has been developed in this manner.

IAPMO urges its members and other interested parties to get involved in the process to ensure effectiveness in preserving the public’s health, safety, and welfare through fair and balanced development of its codes and standards. Installers, plumbing and mechanical officials, the construction industry, engineers, and manufacturers all benefit from a cooperative effort in developing codes.

Anybody interested in serving on the task group may complete the application online at the following URL: http://forms.iapmo.org/iapmo/committee/app_task_group.aspx

For any questions, you may contact Taylor Duran at (909) 218-8126 or by email at taylor.duran@iapmo.org.
