By Kelly Faloon
December 29, 2015

Workforce development solutions, leadership tips, new technologies and results-oriented strategies — these were some of the topics that PHCC members learned about during the 2015 PHCC CONNECT, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 in Hollywood, Fla.

The event included two inspiring keynote speeches. The first, by Doc Hendley, focused on his Wine to Water organization, as well as the immense power of meaningful relationships and how they can help both individuals and businesses overcome obstacles.

The second, “Lessons in Leadership,” was led by the U.S. Navy’s first female F-14 fighter pilot Carey Lohrenz, who used her Navy experience to emphasize the fundamentals of how to be successful.

Some of the award winners this year were: PHCC/Delta Apprentice of the Year Brandon Pettwayof Bill Howe Plumbing, San Diego; PHCC/Delta Plumbing Contractor of the Year Harley Perryof Perry Plumbing, National City, Calif.; Federated Insurance’s “Safety First!” Contractor of the Year Doug Turnerof Doug Turner Plumbing Co., Sugar Land, Texas; and Plumbing Instructor of the Year Charles Chalkof Baltimore.

The annual Plumbing Apprentice Contest is always a big draw for attendees. This year’s winners are: first place, James Petersonof John J. Maurer, Cataumet, Mass.; second place, Jared Beninatiof Evan Hibbs Plumbing, Portsmouth, Va.; and third place, David Spaethof Harty Mechanical, Austin, Minn.

Mark Giebelhausof Marlin Mechanical Corp., Phoenix, was awarded PHCC’s Col. George D. Scott Award, which recognizes a PHCC member who has provided years of service and unselfish devotion to the association and industry, and whose industry efforts have provided many benefits to other PHC contractors.

The Copper Development Association was awarded the Chairman’s Award by the PHCC Educational Foundation for its contributions and commitment to the industry.

Charles “Chip” E. Greeneof Greene & Associates (Macon, Ga.) was installed as the president of the association. Laurie Criglerof L & D Associates (Aroda, Va.) was elected vice president. President-elect is Patrick Wallnerof Wallner Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning (Redding, Calif.)

She also was a former editor of the Radiant Comfort Guide the Radiant & Hydronics Report — both official publications of the Radiant Professionals Alliance — and twice-monthly Radiant & Hydronics eNews, an enewsletter for anyone interested in the world of heating with hot water.

Her editorial specialties included women in plumbing, recruiting for the trades, green construction techniques, water conservation, water treatment, hydronic heating, radiant heating and cooling, snow melt, solar thermal and geothermal.
