Solar Thermal Products -- Spring 2011

April 1, 2011
New products for solar thermal applications.

Off-Grid Solar Tank

To complement its high-temperature collector efficiency, Thermomax Industries introduces its 316L stainless-steel, “off-grid” water tank (R24 insulation) that passively links DHW, radiant floor, wood stoves, geothermal, pools, hot tubs and in-ground storage. The twin-coil tank has an upper heat exchange coil to supply radiant floor or other applications. The lower coil is for solar and wood boiler input. Double-wall vented coils are optional, with provisions for two electric elements from 24VDC to 240VAC and ports for demand boiler backup. Also appropriate for those looking for low-energy-consumption systems.

Hot Water Circulator

The Grundfos ALPHA features a permanent magnet motor design, which reduces power consumption by 50 percent or more, and can be used for moving hot water in solar thermal applications. The circulator’s AUTOADAPT feature controls pump performance automatically, ensuring the lowest possible energy consumption without sacrificing comfort. In retrofit installations, the existing conduit connection may be used if safe. For new installations, the ALPHA with a terminal box or the ALPHA plug with line cord may be used. The replaceable terminal box, with two-hole conduit access, uses Grundfos’ standard pushpin power terminal connections.

Multiport Storage Tank

Rheem’s Marathon Multi-Port Thermal Storage Tank provides building professionals with a lightweight, energy-efficient thermal storage tank with the installation flexibility to fit a wide variety of applications. The tank is available in two-port and three-port configurations and is a match for solar, geothermal and hydronic water heating systems. A thermostatically controlled backup electrical element provides 40 gallons or more of heated water. A titanium sheath resists lime buildup and enables the product to run more efficiently while creating a highly energy-efficient whole-home comfort system.

DC Circulating Pump

Bell & Gossett’s DC spherical motor circulating pump features direct connection to photovoltaic panels and automatic performance optimization. The ecocric SC Solar is designed for solar thermal systems or most circulation pump applications where conventional power is not available. Using less than 1 watt of startup power, the pump features Maximum Power Point tracking, which allows it to modify its operating point and find the point of optimum performance. Electronically commutated motor technology eliminates the need for a conventional shaft, seal and bearing assembly.

Thermal Storage, Hydraulic Separation

Caleffi’s new ThermoCon storage tanks maximize the efficiency of any hydronic system by providing solar thermal storage and hydraulic separation for heated or cooled water. ThermoCon tanks are available in 50-, 80- or 120-gallon sizes and feature seven 2-inch NPT connections that allow convenient corner placement. These fully insulated, porcelain-coated steel tanks are ideal for chilled, hot or potable water applications.

Hot Water System

FAFCO’s 500 Series system includes a custom-designed digital solar controller, heat exchanger and pumps incorporated into a single, compact unit that installs easily on the water heater tank or on a wall. It uses a proprietary, SRCC-approved glycol-based heat transfer solution within the dedicated solar loop, providing freeze protection for the system and eliminating the need for a drainback tank. Its dual-loop design heats the potable water via the solar heat exchanger while maintaining separation from the potable water loop.

Commercial Solar Thermal

The Lochinvar/TiSUN line of commercial solar thermal systems includes solar thermal panels, storage tanks, a pumping station and a wide array of system accessories. The solar thermal panels are available in two options: Commercial Solar Flat-Panel Collector and Light-Duty Commercial Solar Collector. Both feature a laser-welded absorber and serpentine heat coil design that allows for optimum heat transfer in a forced-circulation solar system. The Lochinvar/TiSUN Commercial Solar Pump Station is an all-in-one solar pumping package, complete with a differential solar control that offers eight different system capabilities and Btu metering.

Solar Trilogy

Taco’s family of solar pumping products and technology is an ideal fit for a wide variety of solar thermal applications. The Solar Pumping Station combines all the features needed for a closed-loop water heating system. Connections include: two for the solar collector(s), two for the storage tank’s heat exchanger and one for the expansion tank. The Solar X-Pump Block combines a stainless-steel, flat-plate heat exchanger with two bronze circulators and a solar differential temperature control. The Variable Speed Solar Pump line includes circulators with integral solar differential temperature controls.
