IAPMO will once again take an active role in national High-Performance Buildings Week, returning to Washington, D.C., this week. Celebrating more than two decades of support for this progressive initiative, IAPMO will join members of the High-Performance Buildings Coalition (HPBC) on Capitol Hill to advocate for resilient, efficient and sustainable building practices.

Organized by the HPBC, a private-sector coalition of approximately 200 organizations that support the High-Performance Buildings Caucus of the U.S. Congress, this annual event connects industry leaders with policymakers to promote forward-thinking building policy. IAPMO is a founding member of the HPBC. Senior Director of Government Relations Jim Scarborough is chair of the coalition, with Executive Vice President of Government Relations Dain Hansen and Senior Director of Government Relations Christopher Lindsay having previously held leadership roles. Christina Kaeini, senior director of Government Relations, who chairs the HPBC State and Local Affairs Committee, will also join Scarborough, Hansen and Lindsay in representing IAPMO throughout the week.

IAPMO will participate in each of these events this week:

Tuesday, June 24 – House Meetings

IAPMO and HPBC members will meet with Congressional representatives and their staff to discuss priorities related to building performance, safety and sustainability.

Wednesday, June 25 – Senate Meetings

Meetings continue with members of the U.S. Senate and their staff to share insights and advocate for support of high-performance building policies and programs.

Thursday, June 26 – Congressional Briefing: “Retrofitting for Resilience”

12:30-2 p.m. | Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2045

Convened by Scarborough in his role as HPBC chair, this year’s Congressional Briefing will explore strategies for adapting the nation’s building stock to better withstand extreme weather events — such as hurricanes, wildfires and severe storms — that are becoming more frequent and costly.

The event will highlight key findings from the new report Retrofitting for Resilience, which demonstrates how targeted investments in mitigation can save lives, protect property, and support economic recovery. The briefing will also spotlight legislation such as S. 1323, the Facilitating Increased Resilience, Environmental Weatherization and Lowered Liability (FIREWALL) Act.

“We are excited once again to provide the opportunity for representatives of the Coalition’s 200 organizations to visit with members of Congress,” Scarborough said. “This annual event highlights how we support legislation and policies that protect life and property, promote innovative building technologies, enhance U.S. economic competitiveness, and support the development of private sector standards, codes and guidelines that address these concerns.”

IAPMO is committed to shaping the built environment through the advancement of safe, responsible codes and standards, evidence-based policies, and innovative solutions that support public health, sustainable construction, and efficient use of water and energy.
