A new quiz from the nonprofit Propane Education & Research Council helps homeowners determine if and when it is time to pull the plug on their current water heater for a newer, more efficient model.

“Water heaters are an energy-intensive appliance,” said Roy Willis, president and CEO of PERC. “They are the second-largest energy user in the home, and as they age they become less efficient, requiring even more energy.”

The free online quiz at KnowYourWaterHeater.com helps homeowners decide if and when they should pull the plug on their current water heater. The five-question quiz asks homeowners where they live, how often they maintain their water heater, what type of water heater they have, and which energy source they use. Based on the answers, it tells homeowners whether it might be time to shop for a newer, more efficient model.

PERC estimates that the average water heater needs to be replaced every 10 to 12 years. However, just because your water heater is a decade old doesn’t mean it’s ready to be replaced.

“Waiting until your water heater fails will cost you money,” Willis said. “By simply switching to a new energy-efficient model or a new energy source, you could save hundreds of dollars each year. That’s invaluable information for any homeowner.”

In addition to the free quiz, KnowYourWaterHeater.com also includes information on new NAECA standards and the benefits of gas-powered water heaters.
