New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed a bill earlier this year tasking the NYC Office of Long-Term Planning & Sustainability to study geothermal energy resources and the feasibility of city-wide adoption of geothermal heating and cooling. It is one aspect of Bloomberg’s larger PlaNYC effort.

Reducing citywide greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 is PlaNYC’s culminating goal.To help with this goal, New York City enacted a comprehensive effort, called the Greener, Greater Buildings Plan, which targets energy efficiency in a good percentage of the city’s large existing buildings.
