It’s roughly 3 ½ months until Veterans’ Day, but we shouldn’t wait until that day to think about our veterans, what they’ve risked to preserve our freedoms and what we can do to thank them. I recently interviewedMary Kennedy Thompson, president of Mr. Rooter, for Plumbing & Mechanical’s August issue cover story. While plumbing and drain-cleaning may not be the focus of your business, I thought you might be interested in the fact that she spent eight years in the Marine Corps and is currently the chair of the International Franchise Association’s VetFran committee, which gives returning veterans training and financial assistance to purchase a franchise operation.

As Thompson told me, veterans are not looking for a handout - they just want the opportunity to make a good living for their families. Isn’t that the least we can do for them?
