Customer expectations in the mechanical room are continually evolving, and alongside these changes comes the introduction of new technology in the plumbing industry. Many professionals are seeing an increase in the demand for more sustainable products and practices in the commercial sector. When plumbers need to accommodate high-demand applications while also being conscious of a building’s carbon emissions, they look to water technology manufacturers for a more environmentally friendly solution.

Sustainability is redefining what’s possible in modern plumbing, and customers are taking note. A main driving factor is environmental consciousness, but cost savings also play a major role in the growing popularity of sustainable technology. When units can provide a high output while using less energy and costing less money, it’s a win for both customers and the environment. Regulations and government rulings are also encouraging the widespread adoption of green plumbing. In combination with manufacturer support, there has been a greater drive for green technology across the plumbing industry.

Evolving high efficiency technology to meet customer needs

High efficiency units are highly sought after in the commercial water heating industry and can lessen the environmental footprint while still delivering great hot water output. For example, A. O. Smith’s Cyclone FLEX High Efficiency Commercial Gas Water Heater operates with up to 98% thermal efficiency. Cyclone FLEX units are equipped with AiQTM Adaptive Gas Technology that use combustion efficiency and system reliability by identifying gas supply qualities and automatically adjusting parameters for optimal combustion control. With adaptive technology, the unit is available for different types of installations—adjusting to a building’s exact needs. Features like AiQ allow for sustainable technology to be installed in a variety of systems, including buildings with unique application needs.

In commercial buildings, choosing the right water heater is critical in meeting both operational and sustainability goals. The Lochinvar ARMOR Condensing Water Heater features a heat exchanger, and the water tube design was crafted to reduce heat loss.

Beyond efficiency – features that attract customers

While it’s important for professionals to provide their customers with water heating technology that offers higher efficiency, there are other features that can attract customers. Integration with demand response programs through utilities allows water heaters to adjust heating cycles in real time to ease strain on the grid, creating a more sustainable and intelligent energy ecosystem. These demand response programs can also greatly benefit facility managers and building owners as they allow a unit to run at non-peak times, subsequently decreasing energy costs.

Connectivity features like remote monitoring put the power of control into the hands of customers. This allows them to manage their systems more efficiently, preventing costly issues from potential leaks and finding ways to save more energy.

There are also several government-led and regulatory factors driving the green plumbing shift. Manufacturers and customers are seeing more requirements for high efficiency and sustainable standards from regulations at the local, state and federal levels. This regulatory push is boosting production of green products, making them more accessible for interested customers.

Professional collaboration for personalized solutions

Professionals turn to manufacturer-led educational resources to better understand the value these units can provide. Explaining long-term cost savings, environmental advantages and proper usage and maintenance of their system helps customers make informed decisions and feel confident in their investment.

Resources like A. O. Smith University and LochinvarU are ways for professionals to educate themselves on different technologies. With courses focused on new technology, installation, servicing and more, these resources are updated regularly with information on industry and technology changes.
