Three members of UA Local 638 were killed and two others injured as a result of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Sept. 11. Felix Calixte and Arturo Sereno, both service fitters for B.P. Airconditioning Corp., Brooklyn were killed. Calixte joined the union in 1986 and Sereno was initiated in July 2000.

New York City firefighter Thomas Kelly was also killed. Kelly joined the union in 1970. He was still a member, but no longer active in construction.

In addition, two other union members were injured, but have since been released from hospital. Thomas Marrinan, a service fitter for B.P. Airconditioning Corp. joined the union in 1995. Kevin Carr, a construction fitter for York Airconditioning, joined the union in 1983.
