According to the ADP Small Business Report, total private employment among small businesses (U.S. companies with fewer than 50 employees) increased by 44,000 in August. The service-providing sector was shown to be the leading cause of growth with an increase of 52,000 jobs (the goods-producing sector reported a loss of 8,000).

In contrast, employment among medium- and large-size businesses decreased by 6,000.

The ADP Small Business Report is based on data from the ADP National Employment Report, created by the company in partnership with Macroeconomic Advisers LLC.
