On Aug. 9, the Fluoride Action Network, a group of more than 600 professionals — physicians, dentists, scientists and environmentalists — urged Congress to stop fluoridation of the nation’s water supply until Congressional hearings are conducted.

The group cites evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks.

Dr. Arvid Carlsson, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine, wrote in the statement, “Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It’s really obsolete.”

Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group, a Washington, D.C.-based watchdog organization, stated, “It is time for the U.S. to recognize that fluoridation has serious risks that far outweigh any minor benefits, and unlike many other environmental issues, it’s as easy to end as turning off a valve at the water plant.”
