Air-source heat pumps vs. ground-source heat pumps

A recent article in Forbes magazine explains the pros and cons of air-source and ground-source heat pumps. The author notes that ground-source heat pump manufacturers such as WaterFurnace and ClimateMaster introduced new heat pumps with variable-speed compressor technology. But this technology also is used in air-source heat pumps made by Mitsubishi and Fujitsu.

This improvement in technology, the author says, “has made the efficiency of the best air-source heat pumps equivalent to that of many geothermal heat pumps, especially when used in less extreme climates.”
