California includes geothermal heat pump, ground-loop technologies in renewable energy definition

California Gov. Jerry Brown on Sept. 27 signed into law Assembly Bill 2339, broadening the definition of renewable energy to include geothermal heat pumps and geothermal ground-loop technologies, according to the North Bay Business Journal. California is the third state to pass such legislation - after Maryland and New Hampshire.  

AB 2339 requires the California Energy Commission to consider statutory and permit requirements and other obstacles to the use of geothermal at a time when the state is striving to comply with the AB 32 greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and meet the its energy-efficiency objectives.
