Calif. Safety & Health Penalties Hiked

May 17, 2000
A law increases civil and criminal penalties for willful, serious and repeat violations of occupational safety and health standards.

California Gov. Gray Davis (D) signed a bill into law that increased civil and criminal penalties for willful, serious and repeat violations of occupational safety and health standards. Fines for employers were increased from $5,000 to $15,000. Willful violations of such standards leading to death, permanent or prolonged injury of an employee can now be prosecuted as a misdemeanor or felony.
