Illinois Poison Control Center received 1,200 calls about carbon monoxide
poisoning in 2006 - up almost 40 percent from the year before.
The Illinois Poison Control Center received 1,200 calls about carbon monoxide poisoning last year - up almost 40 percent from the year before. Center Director Dr. Michael Wahl blamed colder weather. Since heating systems work that much harder, various malfunctions would be more likely to release CO. In two separate incidents in October and November, a total of 16 people were taken to the hospital for CO poisoning. As of Jan. 1, a new state law requires CO detectors in all houses, condos and apartments. Exempt are homes not heated by natural gas or fossil fuel.
