The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration announced the second competition for YouthBuild grants that provide disadvantaged young people with education and training, and expand the supply of affordable housing in low-income communities. A total of approximately $47 million is due to be awarded in spring 2009 in amounts ranging between $700,000 and $1.1 million. The deadline for applications is Jan. 15, 2009.

YouthBuild (www.youthbuild.org) is an alternative education program that provides disadvantaged youth with training in construction while emphasizing pathways to postsecondary education that lead to careers in high-growth, high-demand occupations. Those served include young people who have been in the juvenile justice system, youth aging out of foster care, high school dropouts and other at-risk populations.

The competition is open to organizations including workforce investment boards, One-Stop Career Centers, faith-based and community groups, housing development agencies, Indian tribes and other entities. More than 200 YouthBuild programs are currently operating throughout the country. Approximately 2,900 young people in 90 to 100 communities will be served during the first year of this project.
