Habitat for Humanity's Women Build program has a new project - “First Families Building Homes Across America.” The two-year initiative will enlist governors' spouses to construct at least one home in their respective states for a low-income family.

The First Families project is scheduled to kick off May 9 - the week of Mother's Day - in Mobile, Ala. Janet Huckabee, wife of Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, will be joined by other governors' spouses and local volunteers to construct a house with a family who lost their home to Hurricane Katrina.

Women Build recruits, nurtures and trains women volunteers to create and maintain simple, decent and affordable homes. The work sites offer women of all skills and backgrounds a chance to learn construction skills in a comfortable environment. Training is provided on-site and through Women Build how-to clinics taught at Lowe's stores. Lowe's is a sponsor of the Women Build program.
