The 2008 International Plumbing Apprentice Contest,
organized by the PHCC Educational Foundation, gets under way at 7 a.m. and runs
until 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, in Booth 1911.
Twenty apprentices from 13 states will
be competing for cash and prizes worth more than $2,500.
Contestants
are required to install a basic three-piece bathroom: water closet, sink with
faucet and shower pan with faucet. The installation includes the water and
drain, waste and vent lines. Contestants demonstrate their ability to perform
jobs or skills selected from the following list of competencies:
Tools
And Equipment
- Measure
lines to the nearest sixteenth of an inch with a ruler/tape measure.
- Identify
and use basic hand tools common to the plumbing trade.
- Determine
measurements from a manufacturer’s specifications.
- Determine
rough-in locations.
- Establish grade lines for installing
plumbing.
Systems
Rough-in: Drainage Systems
- Identify fittings required on a drainage system.
- Calculate
the slope required for building sewer lines.
- Install soil
and waste back vents.
- Install cleanouts on drains.
- Rough-in
waste lines and vents for built-in lavatories.
- Rough-in
waste lines and vents for bathtubs.
- Secure horizontal and
vertical lines of pipe to wood, metal and masonry surfaces.
- Fabricate
vinyl shower pan.
Systems Rough-in: Water Systems
- Rough-in water
supply lines for showers.
- Rough-in water supply lines for
water closets.
- Conduct water pressure tests on a water
supply system.
- Measure, cut and join cast iron pipe to a
cast iron hubless fitting.
While much of the hard is similar to past contests, this
year’s event includes a new critique session afterward. During a special
seminar, Friday, Oct. 3, 8 a.m.-12 noon, Room B306, contestants will each receive
feedback from the judges and what they did right and what they could improve
on.
The seminar also includes a one-hour presentation from Legend Valve on new
products and a 90-minute soldering class from the Copper Development
Association.
The winner will be announced at the
PHCC’s closing event Friday night at the Georgia Aquarium.
