Comic book (literally) comes to life in 2005’s “Sin City”,
which really pushed the boundaries of film and printed page. It was co-directed
by Robert
Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, so expect heavy weaponry and gore, and written/adapted
by Frank Miller from his “Sin
City” graphic novels.
The movie involved several A-list actors
such as Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Benicio del
Toro, Nick Stahl, Elija Wood, and many more (it seemed even the “extras” on Sin
City’s set were Hollywood’s elite!).
For this installment
of Plumbing At The Movies, I recall a special scene from Miller’s “The Big Fat
Kill” chapter of the film, in which good-guy Dwight (Owen) is disturbed by the
continued harassment of his girlfriend Shellie (Brittany Murphy) by her ex-boyfriend,
not-so-good-guy Jackie Boy (del Toro). In order to scare Jackie Boy off, a surprise
beating takes place when Dwight emerges from his hiding place in the shower, and
ends with Jackie Boy’s head being shoved into a urine-filled toilet bowl.
“If
you ever so much as
think [Shellie's] name, I'll cut
you in ways that’ll make you useless to a woman,” Dwight warns Jackie Boy,
encouraging him to leave Shellie alone. (a long version of this scene can be found
here. Things get good around the four-minute mark.)
This chapter of the movie goes
on to where Jackie Boy and his thugs receive their ultimate come-uppance, and
the story progresses to an all-out street war between dirty cops and the city’s
prostitutes.
