As we prepare to scare our neighbors and frighten small
children with ghost stories this weekend, we leave you with one movie that
explores urban legends and ranks high on the horror scale.
“Candyman” in 1992 stars Virginia Madsen
as a University
of Illinois graduate
student looking to complete her thesis on folklore and urban legends. One story
in particular hits close to home. On the near-north side of Chicago stands the Cabrini-Green housing
project, seething with gang violence and occupants fearing for their lives.
A monster is terrorizing the high-rise,
and he can be summoned by saying his name five times in the mirror (think
Bloody Mary superstitions).
In
this scene, Madsen is lead by a young resident to Candyman’s supposed hideout
-- a men’s public washroom, with a gross factor at +10. She ventures in to
document the space, and finds a commode crawling with bees and their hive.
Tony Todd plays Candyman’s role. And if
the bees and gagtastic bathroom don’t give you a shiver, his deep baritone
voice certainly will. Note: Todd and the bees of “Candyman” were voted #75 on BravoTV’s
100 Scariest Movie Moments Of All time.
