Here is an interesting foreign film from 2007 from Uruguay
writers/directors César Charlone and Enrique Fernández. “El baño del Papa” (“The
Pope’s Toilet”) is set in 1988 in Melo, a poor Uruguayan town on the Brazilian border, where the townsfolk
await the visit of Pope John Paul II.
Nobody knows how
many people will travel to Melo to see the Pope. Numbers are thrown around: hundreds,
thousands; it is a big deal for this town! Its citizens are struggling, and now
all these pilgrims will need food, drink and lodging, flags and souvenirs This
visit truly is a gift from God for them.
Central to the
story is petty smuggler Beto, who is certain he’s found the best business idea
of them all: He will build a bathroom, where these thousands of visitors can
find relief.
Quick trivia fact: This film was
Uruguay's submission to the 80th Academy Awards (2008) for the Best
Foreign Language Film, but did not make the cut as a nominee.
