The Money Pit

We’ve all taken on household projects that have just turned out disastrous. Trade pro or not, I’m sure even you’ve gotten in over your head.

Like the folks who bought the house in 1986’s “The Money Pit”: The house has plumbing problems, electrical problems, foundation problems, permit problems, the list goes on. The owners can’t find contractors to do the work, and when they do, scheduling and change orders are out of control.

There are many memorable construction scenes from this film, but the one below wins not only for the clawfoot bathtub falling through the ceiling and disintegrating on the floor below, but for Tom Hanks’ unforgettable laugh. A laugh filled with as much frustration and disenchantment as it is humor.

Katie Rotella was the senior editor of Plumbing & Mechanical from 1999-2009.
