Here are undoubtedly two of the most famous plumbing scenes
in the movies that have nothing to do with the usual toilets, sinks or tubs.
In the first scene, Jack Nicholson’s
character McMurphy bets the other inmates of a mental institution that he can
lift a marble hydrotherapy console up off its moorings. Of course, he can’t,
but the point is at least he tried. The second scene is the end of the movie
and shows the Chief indeed lifting the fixture, hurling it through a grated
window and escaping.
This 1975 movie won all five major
Academy Awards, which hadn’t happened since “It Happened One Night” did it in
1934. (“Silence Of The Lambs” repeated the sweep in 1991.) Kirk Douglas actually
played the role of McMurphy on stage and bought the movie rights and passed the
production rights on to his son, Michael.
SteveSmith Steve Smith was editor of Plumbing & Mechanical from 1996-2009.
