‘The Shining’

Here’s a movie I’m surprised I haven’t thought about before. It has three key bathroom scenes: The first in which Jack Nicholson’s character meets a hot babe coming out of the shower in Room 237 – only later to be revealed as a hideous crone (guys: Insert ex-wife joke here). The second takes place in a public bathroom with an odd color scheme and, finally, the most famous of the bunch, the “Here’s Johnny!” scene where Nicholson smashes through a bathroom door with an axe.

You know you’re in trouble when you and your wife and child take a job that requires the three of you locked up in an isolated hotel that’s snowed in for the winter. Add to that the fact the previous caretaker went crazy and killed his family and himself. Oh, and did I forget to mention that the place is built on the site of an Indian burial ground?

These things usually end in tragedy. If you’ve ever read the Steven King book this movie is based on you’ll know that the hotel is destroyed by an exploding boiler. So we’ve got that going for us, too.

The movie’s almost 30 years old now and wasn’t a huge success at first. But it’s reputation has grown over the years and, even without knowing it, you’ve no doubt seen or read things derived from the film.

Recently, for example, The Onion printed a great story about poor little Sasha Obama meeting up with the creepy Bush twins while riding her tricycle through the White House halls.

We could only find two of the three plumbing scenes on YouTube, but the first one we mentioned is NSFW anyway. We’ve also thrown in a great scene that inspired The Onion article.
