The Big Necessity

No, that isn’t actually the title of a movie (although I think it would make a great title). We’re going to take a break from our weekly movie-watching to tell you about a great book called “The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters.”

Author Rose George takes you around the world to talk about toilets (or, rather, the routine lack of them for more than 2 billion people) as well as sewer systems and wastewater treatment. Without plumbing how could I write about plumbing at the movies?

Here’s a clip of the author discussing the book on a public affairs show. Plus, we have another short clip in which about couple of Africans describe a “flying toilet,” just one condition discussed in the book.
